'If it is too big cut it off'

After a lot of years it was time for a 'new bed'. We bought a second hand pinewood bed and thanks to my DH it looks like a new one. (He sawed off and added some wood. He painted the bed in a nice 30's yellow color)

The only problem is that this bed is bigger as the other one.
It means that my quilts don't fit anymore.

I made this top and backing in 2008. I still love it and it is perfect for my new bed.
So time to baste it.

2008 is a long time ago....
When I layered the top I found out that the backing and batting were too small. (ooh and I just cut the batting down from a kingsize....)
Oops, what to do.

1)  Buy a new king size batting and enlarge the backing.
2) Listen to Gwen Marston's --my idol--wise words: 'If it is too big cut it off'.

I cut it off.

 It's time to baste :-)

It's so pretty and now I think it is going to be even more special because of the element of surprise - the side you cut off. Someday your great-grandchildren are going to ask, "why did grandmam cut off that side?" and they'll hear the story about the yellow bed and the quilt batting that was too small. Love it :)

What a fabulous color you've chosen for the new bed! And your quilt - it's going to look just perfect. How clever (and brave) of you to cut it down to fit the batting. I can't wait to see how it al comes together.

Such a wonderful project. Love that top, such bold, big blocks. Lovely fabrics, guess that is why I always love seeing logcabin quilts, so many fabrics! Great pictures. Enjoy yourself, it is going to be a great quilt (again)!

Wat dapper van jou om er zo de schaar in te zetten. En volgens mij gaat deze ingreep juist héél leuk uitpakken! Zoals ik het nu kan zien gaan bed en quilt een perfecte match vormen!!

I more often have trouble with being too small than being too large. Your bed color suits your personality.

Lovely! It looks like you made it in 1908, not 2008. It is a perfect reproduction. You have a wonderful sense of color. And I love the yellow bed!

You are blessed with a husband that can do woodworking and repairs! Looks like a wonderful new bed and it requires a new quilt, what fun!!! I think you're a very brave girl to just cut it off, I'm sure it will all work out fine! Looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Love the scrappy log cabin and hand quilting will put it over the top. Enjoy your stitching and wonderful new bed! (Thanks for sharing, it was fun to hear about).

Dat was wel even spannend denk ik....ik hield ook bijna mijn adem in. Het maakt de quilt extra bijzonder en nu is het niet zomaar een quilt maar eentje met een verhaal.
Ik vind de stoffen en de kleuren super!

The quilt is beautiful! I wouldn't have even though of 'cutting it off' but such a simple solution!

The quilt top you created has a variety of great choices of fabric. My husband and I also bought a new bed and my quilts do not fit on it the way they did on the previous bed. I understand that feeling. Your husband is so handy it is nice to make things your own, the yellow is pretty. We gave away our first bedroom set to a young couple who were just starting out. Thank you for the inspiration. I have a quilt top waiting and I can just add to it and make it fit our new bed. Another fun quilt adventure.

Fijne avond
Liefs,
Mirjam

That's really cool! Buying a new bed is always such a process. Especially when you live in a 3rd floor apartment in the city. Getting the old one down is such a pain. Luckily, when ordering a new one they (usually) offer some kind of delivery option! Nice work so far on the quilt! I'll have to look for the updates on it!
